Congressman Chaka Fattah (D-PA), a Congressional leader for urban education reform, has been named to the National Black Male Achievement Advisory Board of the Council of the Great City Schools.
The newly formed group will seek to identify solutions that will significantly improve black male academic achievement. Fattah joins a board composed of academic researchers, national community and faith-based leaders, youth advocates and others. They will advise the Council on possible solutions following the release of its report last year titled "A Call for Change: The Social and Educational Factors Contributing to the Outcomes of Black Males in Urban Schools."
The invitation to Fattah was extended by Michael Casserly, Executive Director of the Washington-based advocacy group, which represents 65 of the nation's largest school districts, including the School District of Philadelphia.
"This board will provide recommendations to address growing international competition and the national imperative to improve academic outcomes for young men and boys, particularly African Americans," Congressman Fattah said.
"It is critical that our country meet this challenge to ensure the continuation of American global leadership and preserve the standard of living and quality of life most Americans enjoy," he said. "We will not achieve this goal without significant change on the part of individuals, families, public and private institutions, and the federal government. I have been proud to work with the Council of the Great City Schools over many years and am honored to have this opportunity to serve."
