Martin Behrman Charter School will Celebrate its First “Poetry on the Avenue” with Special Guests, Internationally Renowned Poets Jessica Care Moore and Abiodun Oyewole of The Last Poets on Friday, May 20, 2011, in New Orleans, Louisiana
Martin Behrman Charter School will celebrate its first “Poetry on the Avenue”, an evening of art, spoken word poetry, and live music on Friday, May 20, 2011. The event will feature performances by student performers from Behrman Charter School, several local poets and musical artists, and internationally renowned feature poets Jessica Care Moore, an HBO Def Poet and Abiodun Oyewole of The Last Poets. The event will be hosted by New Orleans’s own Chuck Perkins and will take place on the school’s front lawn from 5pm to 8pm. The school is located at 715 Opelousas Avenue, New Orleans, LA, located in New Orleans’s historic Algiers Point.
“This will be an awesome opportunity for Behrman kids and the greater community-at-large to tap into some of the roots of culture that influence them daily even when they may not realize it,” says Michael “Quess?” Moore, Behrman teacher, poet and event coordinator. “Poetry on the Avenue” will provide a festive and safe environment with tents provided by Marlon Gusman and several vendors selling their wares.
The event is free and open to the public. Monetary donations will be accepted to support the school’s art integration program.
