Inspiring Attendees to Transform and Impact Their Communities

Susan L. Taylor, Editor-in-chief emeritus of Essence and founder of the National CARES Mentoring Movement is the keynote speaker for the President's Banquet at the National Beauty Culturist League's (NBCL) 92nd Annual Conference on July 20, 2011 at 8:00p.m. This year's conference theme is "Education Today, Secures Tomorrow."

The President's Banquet is a highlight of weeklong conference events that begins July 17 through July 23 at the Indianapolis' Crowne Plaza at Historic Union Station. Tickets for the President's Banquet are available at door for $75.00.

Indianapolis is where Madam C.J. Walker, the first African-American self-made businesswoman millionaire, built her beauty and hair care manufacturing plant. Walker made her money by creating successful beauty and hair products for African-American women.

"History will serve well for those in the coming generations to know that the NBCL returned to the 'Roots' of the African-American Hair Industry," said Dr. Katie B. Catalon, NBCL National President.

The conference kicks off with an elegant soiree hosted by A' Leila Bundles, the great- great-granddaughter of Walker, onSunday, July 17 in the Madam C. J. Walker Ballroom.

Following her career at Essence, Taylor continues to be passionate about impacting the Black community. "In January 2008, I left Essence magazine after 37 years to join with community leaders in mounting the largest mentoring movement in the history of the nation. Founded in 2006 as Essence CARES, the National CARES Mentoring Movement is today a fast-growing coalition of some of the nation's most trusted organizations, concerned Black Americans and caring supporters," said Taylor.

Taylor's grassroots involvement extends to partnering with General Mills to serve as their national spokesperson for Feeding Dreams, which is a national platform that celebrates the everyday heroes impacting their communities. In its fourth year, General Mills launched Feeding Dreams Get Togethers.

In cities throughout the U.S., there will be over 1200 health and education gatherings. Each Get Together will feature a discussion of relevant and practical health and education topics and honor a local mother who is making an extraordinary contribution to her family and community.
